Nominations are open!
We’re excited to announce that Taming of the Review is hosting the first annual Carmen Awards, an awards ceremony celebrating the amazing talent showcased during the 2019-2020 season. Nominations will stay open to everyone through May 2020 and winners will be announced at a ceremony at the end of the 2019/2020 season.
You can nominate as many worthy actors and productions as you think are deserving. We are taking a new approach to categories, namely, we’re ditching gendered categories in favor of having more variety in the types of performance and are including more design and technical awards. Please keep your nominations to productions from the current season. All categories are listed below.
Named The Carmen Awards after Carmen Soto de Vásquez, the founder of the barrio’s Teatro Carmen. Carmen was devoted to presenting dramatic works in Spanish and in 1915 opened the theatre with a production of Cerebro y Corazón by Mexican playwright Teresa Farias de Isassi. It remained a theatre, community arts, and entertainment venue until 1926. The original building is still standing in Barrio Viejo.
To nominate an actor or production, please fill out the form for each nomination, even if you are nominating the same individual so long as it is for a different category or production. For example, you can nominate Actor A for their performance in Play A and Play B, but not twice for Play A. You can nominate them for, say, Best Performer in a Dramatic Role: Lead and Best Costume Design for a Play for Play A if they filled both roles on that production. There is no maximum number of nominations you can submit.
We are focusing on five major areas: Performance, Direction, Technical & Creative, Writing, and Overall. We also have three special awards to recognize those members of our community and productions that contributed most to local theatre this season.
